Dear Friends and SNOW Sports Followers,

Your interest in our unique mountain history and your support – both verbal and financial – has helped us maintain and build a strong organization with a vision supported by the greater Sierra Nevada community, as well as state, national, and international partners.

As we move from summer into fall, we wish to share with you our progress and some exciting future plans.

Summer 2023 Highlights

After years of studies and reviews and a welcome partnership with Placer County, The Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the museum and cultural center in the Olympic Valley Park was presented at the Placer County Planning Commission on August 10, 2023. Our shared goals are to identify and mitigate environmental impact with this project.

Auburn Ski Club’s collection of artifacts and memorabilia will be a major part of the future SNOW Sports Museum. Beginning in September, interns from Sacramento State College will begin Phase 2 of our archiving project, logging information in a museum data management system where it will be organized, protected and curated for future exhibits. We are happy to be providing educational opportunities to our community while making great strides to catalogue and preserve Auburn Ski Club’s valuable collection. If you’re interested in volunteering to work with our Collections team, please send us a message and we’d be happy to welcome your efforts.

Our newest board member, Heidi Spirgi, brings extensive experience in executive roles in high tech, including as Chief Strategy, Marketing and Growth Officer and as a founder of her own HR technology management consulting firm. Heidi brings tremendous breadth and depth of experience. Here’s what she said recently about joining the board:

“I joined the board because I believe museums play a critical role in a healthy and thriving culture, helping us connect with our past, draw inspiration from others’ achievements, and ultimately to understand our own experience in the context of a much larger world. I’ve been an avid fan of the Olympics since I was a child and believe the Olympics is an important cross-border, shared cultural experience that helps to bring people of all nations together.”

We are at an exciting but critical stage in the long process of building this much-desired museum and cultural facility in our Tahoe-Truckee region. Our band of talented board members and advisors has contributed endless time and effort to committees and projects to get us here.

However, we have come to the point where we need to hire a Project Director to manage current projects including Collections Archiving and Curation, and Fundraising, while positioning us to be “ready to go” in early 2024 when we will be hiring a lead Capital Campaign Consultant, Exhibit Designers and working with Architects to create the final working drawings.

We’ve learned that State and Federal grants are largely unavailable until we have an operating museum, so we are relying on community donations to help us advance our cause to build the finest, most modern and engaging cultural amenity in Tahoe-Truckee.

I ask you to please give as generously as you can today, for together we will build a place where we can explore our pasts and imagine our futures.

Thanks for your support,
Eddy Ancinas, President
SNOW Sports Museum Board
