Ambassador Interview

What keeps you inspired to continue to train and be disciplined in your sport?

After 1960 – continued training, competing for 62 FIS (Grenoble) and 64 Olympics (Innsbruck), stayed involved as FIS delegate for Argentina in Sarajevo (1968). Continued as head coach for Lake Tahoe Ski Club and FWSA.

What is a piece of advice you would pass along to generations who aspire to follow in your footsteps?

Keep trying new things – new techniques, new terrain, new equipment. Make it fun, help other aspiring competitors.

Please share a fond memory of your time at the Olympics or another race/competition you competed in.

In 1960, I was astounded to see 100s of soldiers packing the mountains instead of machines. Best Olympics ever (and since) because of camaraderie with athletes from all disciplines and countries, all in 1 place. Bad Gastein @ 1958 World Championships – Met Hans Standteiner, beginning of a lifelong friendship, continuing through children, grandchildren.

What is one thing you always do before a race/competition?

Remember the course, especially in Downhill.

What is something people don’t know about you and would surprise them?

After coaching Lake Tahoe Ski Club in 60s, 70s (local kids-Olympic, USST and others. i.e. Eric, Lance, Sandy, Russel Poulsen, Greg and Vicki Jones, Dick Neilson, Mark Sullivan, Larry Young, Bill and Gary Nagle), also past president, board member and supporter for over 40 years.

What is one thing the SNOW Museum can do right now to support you?

Keep young people engaged, aware and enthused about skiing history.

Why are you excited about supporting the SNOW Museum?

Local ski history is more than just racing and records. It’s important as it relates to families, businesses, life experiences, our community. It’s our life.
